Age of Elijah at his letter to Jehoram of Judah

tucked away over in 2 Chronicles 21:11-20 is Elijah’s letter to Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, King of Judah.

So how old was Elijah when he wrote this letter?

1 Kg 22:41 Jehoshaphat began to reign in 4th year of Ahab King of Israel –

2 Ch 20:31 Jehoshaphat reigned in Judah 25 years.

(Ahab reigned 22 years.)

So maybe the first year after Ahab died, in Ahaziah’s first and only year on the throne, or 23 years into Elijah’s tenure, he confronted the captains of 50.

From Ahab’s 4th year to 25 years later would be 29 years when Jehoshaphat died, or 29 years into Elijah’s tenure. Then Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, began to reign.

If Elijah sent the letter during Jehoram’s first year, Elijah would have been 29 years into his tenure. Maybe 27+29=56 years old?

Jehoram reigned 8 years, the last two with the disease Elijah prophesied for him. If Elijah sent his letter during Jehoram’s 6th year, Elijah would have been 34 years into his tenure. or 27+34=61 years old?

BTW, could this mean Elijah really did start out young? At least a lot younger than some artists painted him, eh? Interesting.
